To the east of Pittsburgh lies Westmoreland County, named for its location west
of the Allegheny Mountains. It is the most populous of the counties surrounding
Allegheny with cities such as Greensburg, New Kensington and Monessen. The county
is a mix of towns and countryside and maintains several county parks to compliment
the 4 state parks located within. Several of these lie within the Laurel Highlands
in the eastern part of the county, a sparsely populated mountainous region created
by the Chestnut and Laurel Ridges.
Westmoreland County is home to attractions and events of all types, ranging from
Idlewild Park and Steelers training camp in the summer to Overly's Country Christmas
in the winter. History buffs enjoy numerous historical sites, including Fort Ligonier,
Braddock's Road, Bushy Run Battlefield and Historic Hanna's Town - an 18th century
reconstructed village that served the frontier as the first county seat west of
the Alleghenies.
Celebrities from Westmoreland County include Fred Rodgers and Arnold Palmer
(Latrobe, PA) as well as Shirley Jones of "The Partridge Family" (Smithton, PA).
