Whatever you are looking for, you can find it in Washington County. From the
industrial-heritage towns of Donora, Charleroi and Monongahela along the "Mon.
River" to the rural hunting grounds to the south and west, there is something
for everyone. Try your luck at the Meadows Racetrack / Casino or visit the nearby
Pennsylvania Trolley Museum. Take the kids for ice cream at Sarris Candy in
Canonsburg. Or spend the day leisurely driving along the National Road (Route 40),
stopping along the way at such sites as the Searights Tollhouse or Century Inn in
Scenery Hill.
The county is easily accessible via Interstates 70 and 79, as well as the recently
constructed Mon-Fayette Expressway (PA 43). At the center lies the City of Washington,
known in Pittsburgh as "Little Washington", the home of Washington & Jefferson College
and the minor league baseball "Wild Things". Northern portions of the county are
accessible via Route 22, which is heavily traveled on summer nights by Pittsburgh
patrons to the Star Lake Amphitheater.
A hidden gem is the Meadowcroft Museum of Rural Life near Avella. Here, historically
significant buildings from around the county have been relocated, forming a
frontier-era village. The grounds and visitor's center are open to the public on
a limited basis, and they offer educational seminars and classes. Also located here
is the Rock Shelter, a nationally renowned archeological site of Native American
origin.
The series finale for the TV show "Quantum Leap" in 1993 was filmed and set in the
\town of Cokeburg. It was chosen because it was the hometown of the show's creator.
