The land that makes up Butler County was once controlled by the Iroquois Confederacy
until the mid-eighteenth century. Soon after, this land was being settled and granted
by the English as prime frontier property. Today, the county is known for its high
growth rate regionally, especially in the southern portion of the county (Cranberry,
Mars, Seven Fields, etc.). However, it still maintains a rural and scenic character
in many other areas, especially around Lake Arthur in Morraine State Park, and in
historic small towns such as Harmony, Saxonburg and Zeilenople.
Butler County can be accessed via I-79 and Route 8 in a north / south direction,
or by the more rural Route 422, connecting it with Kittanning and New Castle and
to the east and west respectively. The city of Butler is centrally located, and
serves as the county seat.
Butler County is the home of Slippery Rock University and several small towns such
as Chicora, Karns City and Evans City, the locale for the movie classic "Night of
the Living Dead".
