Allegheny County lies at the heart of the southwestern Pennsylvania region due to
Pittsburgh's location in the central part of the county. The majority of the remainder
of the county is suburban except for some less populated areas to the north and west.
The county is known for its three rivers: the Allegheny and Monongahela forming the Ohio
at Point State Park in downtown Pittsburgh. The presence of these rivers, along with
an ample supply of coal and iron, allowed the region to prosper as the world leader
in Steel and other related industries. Today these communities struggle with the
loss of industry, but boast a strong sense of unity and heritage. Many of the county's
historic and cultural resources lie quietly within these communities, such as the Rachael
Carson Homestead in Springdale and the Tour-Ed Mine & Museum in Tarentum. In some cases,
industrial brownfields have been redeveloped into successful commercial developments,
such as the Waterfront in Homestead.
Allegheny County offers a diverse array of entertainment, dining and cultural arts
in and around the City of Pittsburgh. The county maintains nine parks scattered
throughout which offer a multitude of outdoor opportunities, along with two state
parks and four Pittsburgh parks. There are also an abundance of museums, historic
sites and historic structures in Allegheny County for visitors to discover as well.
