Previously it took place at the old Blythe house at the famed 808 Main Street address, or at Chess Park; call for details for this year. The walk concludes with refreshments and a chance to discuss the tour. In years past they have hosted a Masquerade Ball, a History and Myths program, and a Spell-a-Bration, a must for magic fans! Call to inquire about these events. All proceeds benefit the Historical Society’s Keep the Museum Open campaign. Tours are not recommended for children under 12.

Northern Nightmares
This was back for 2024, no news as of yet for 2025. Here is last year’s listing:
Northern Nightmares is a family appropriate, 45-minute bus tour of the local area, the Nightmare Tour, with guides providing “real” ghost stories and historic accounts of the local area as you tour Zelienople and Harmony by bus. The narrated tour follows a 4-5 mile loop, with some surprises along the way…
In the past, NN was a collection of related events, a unique group of Halloween activities in and around Zelienople and Harmony, PA. It was based out of The Strand Theater in the heart of Zelienople, and in the past has included chiller and horror movies at the theater. In previous years there were also spooky and Halloween-themed shows and movies at the fabulous Strand Theater all October long.
This event had been around on and off since 2004, but took a break for a while. It returned annually in 2015 – 2018, and again in 2021. It is being held in partnership with Zelienople’s “Moonlight Magic” event.
2024 Dates: Bonus night on Thursday, October 17. Then Friday / Saturday 10/18-19 and 10/25-26. Tours are scheduled to leave at 6:30, 7:30, 8:30 & 9:30. Reservations required!

Old Economy After Dark – Ghost Hunt
Not yet updated for 2025…This was held most recently in 2023, but looks to have been discontinued. Here is the listing from 2023:
Historic places like Old Economy are magnets for ghost stories and urban legends – see if these claims are true! Old Economy is partnering with Beaver County Paranormal for this special event, two nights only. First, there will be a presentation about ghost hunting in general, then the group will explore the historic grounds under cover of darkness to discover what may be lurking about. Please note that this in not a “haunted attraction” with costumed actors.
There was an After Dark “Night of the Living Dead” event here that looked really cool, but it was held in July….

Scare Fair 2025
An extension to the West Alexander Fair, the Halloween Scare Fair also takes place at the Fairgrounds and features an 8,500 square foot, walk-through haunted house. This is a fundraising event sponsored by the West Alexander Fire Department. Celebrating it’s 12th year in 2024, Scare Fair has become a local favorite over the years with such scares as Zombie Madness, The Forest, Clowns-Clowns-Clowns and the haunted maze. In 2020, the theme was The Alien Cannibal Hillbilly Virus Outbreak. In 2021 many of the old haunts were back, plus three newer attractions: Alien Death, The Hillbilly Zone and Claustrophobia.
In 2016 they introduced “The Escape Room”, in which you had 5 minutes to solve puzzles to escape, all with various distractions. If you escaped in time, you would be rewarded with admission to the Scare Fair with no wait, on any night! They are not doing this anymore, but the team with the fastest escape time will win a free ghost hunt, for the entire group!
Last year, they acquired new property on the grounds, allowing them to offer ghost hunts. See the website for details.

Scarehouse
Scarehouse looks like it may be closed once again for 2025… Here is the listing from 2024, when only The Basement was open:
ScareHouse opened in 1999, and has been a staple in the Pittsburgh area ever since. In recent years they brought back all the old favorites like Bunny, Delirium & Creepo the Clown! ScareHouse left its longtime location in Etna back in 2018 and set up shop temporarily in the Strip District. In 2020, they moved to their permanent location in the Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills, along Route 28. There were more extensive and detailed sets at this new location. Now, the website promises that they will return in 2025, but it is unclear as to the location.
However, 2024 marks the return of The Basement, an intense area that is not for the faint of heart or easily offended, and is housed at their prior location in Etna ( 118 Locust Street, Etna PA 15223). This has been on hiatus for the past several years, and it looks as if this is the final run for the attraction this year.
They also maintain the Strip District location at 2420 Penn Avenue for their 2 escape rooms: Stalked by a Killer and The Chipped Fang. They used to offer Steel City Axes, where you can reserve a 2-hour block of axe throwing, but there is no mention of this on the website.
2025 Dates: Typically Fridays through Sundays from mid-September through early November, if open at all.

CLOSED FOR 2025 (Haunted House Graveyard)
The following haunted houses had a good run, but are no longer around. At some point they gave up the ghost. They are being included for the sake of nostalgia, but also to confirm that they are indeed closed.
The Glow (Hartwood Acres)
CLOSED… The Glow is once again not going to be open in Pittsburgh this year. It was here for one year only in 2018. Every year they would move to four new cities; the 2021 lineup included Washington DC, Philly, Chicago & Nashville. But now the website is down, so maybe the Glow has faded…
The Glow, a Jack O’Lantern Experience (now known as Jack’s Pumpkin Glow) set up shop in 2018 in Hartwood Acres Park in Hampton Township, site of the former Christmas Light display several years ago. The glow was an all-ages, non scary walking trail, lit by over 5,000 hand carved pumpkins! The trail was 1/3 mile long, and is stroller friendly. In fact, kids under 2 years of age were free.
The Glow also featured fall food and drink, with live pumpkin carving demonstrations. It aimed to be a way for the whole family to enjoy the Halloween season in the cool, night air of October. Rain or shine…

Bushy Run – Haunted History Hayride & Battlefield / The Haunting of Duncan Cambell
No mention of this event for 2025 on the website – see below. The last year it was open was in 2023.
For many years Bushy Run hosted the Haunted History Hayride and added the Haunted Battlefield in 2022. Many times actual history is the scariest of all. Patrons could learn about frontier history and be frightened by ghosts and goblins, and by 18th century re-enactors along the hayride / walk. The event included a story teller, admission to the museum & gift shop, and concessions and ghost stories in the Stone Room.
In 2023, the event was cancelled due to increased state regulations for hayrides. Instead, they featured “The Haunting of Duncan Cambell”, a play of scary stories revolving around 18th century historical figures. No word yet on if this is being held again this year.

The Haunted Hayloft: Vengeance
CLOSED… The Haunted Hayloft was last open in 2017. It was a fixture in Somerset for many years. Here was the description from that time:
In the past it billed itself as a frightening step back in time, all about History, Horror, Hauntings and Howlings. The Hayloft was used throughout the year for other activities, but in October it came alive as a Halloween attraction, and has been a Somerset tradition for many years. The Haunted Hayloft features 4 haunts, including Historic Haunt, Horrors of Hell (taking the place of Forest of Fright) and the Corn Maze of Carnage. This year there is also zombie Paintball as well as an Escape Room Escapade. The Haunted School – Castle Shannon VFD
CLOSED… This has been closed for decades, and the building has been gone for years… but definitely worth a shout out. It was last open in 2001.
The Haunted School on Route 88 in Castle Shannon was a fixture in the 1980s and 90s, back before the explosion of haunted attractions and their widespread popularity. It was operated by the Castle Shannon Volunteer Fire Department, who purchased the old Hamilton School Building. The school was dedicated in 1904 and in operation until 1969. The three-story school provided a perfect creepy setting for classic haunted house scares and surprises, with something new in each classroom. It featured an old school bus that served as the entrance portal to the school, which added to the whole experience. Here is a link to an article about the attraction in its final year: https://archive.triblive.com/news/haunted-school-to-end-long-run/
Haunted Hillside
CLOSED… Haunted Hillside was last open in 2018, with a planned re-opening in 2020. That didn’t happen due to COVID and nothing has been updated for 2022. Here is the description from 2018:
Haunted Hillside is a haunted attraction where an original story continues to evolve from year to year. This includes custom characters and sets that you won’t find at other attractions. Meet the Farmer family, the gang of kilbillies that love having people for dinner. An occult has also moved into Haunted Hillside, causing mystical mayhem and keeping the killbillies on their toes. Not to mention the scarecrows and sack boys that continue to terrorize folks that they come across. In 2018, there is a new character to watch out for: Allister Heck. Get a feel for what it is like to be in a horror movie! Visit their website to get the current version of the story.
Haunted Hillside is an all-outdoor attraction through wooded areas and corn fields and we are open rain or shine. The terrain is all natural, so please dress appropriately (there could be mud). Ticket prices are only $20 for general admission. Price of admission includes 5 attractions: Helltown, Sackboy Woods, The Salvage Yard, Forest of the Forgotten, and Scarecrow Alley. All of these are connected, for a total length of about a mile.

CLOSED… This Weirton haunted house was last open in 2017. They had hoped to return in 2019… Striplight Theatre was planning to buy the school property and recreate the haunted school, but there was no further info about that. There is an indoor waiting area, perfect for rainy and cold weather. Come for “Friday the 13th Night” on November 13th for one final blast! The site has been identified as having a “strong paranormal presence” by the PA Department of Paranormal Investigation. Come check out the new spine tingling twists and gruesome props for 2015!

Trail of Terror (Carnegie Park): The Beyond
Not updated for 2024, the website is dead. In 2020 they were planning to open for the 2021 season, but I don’t think that happened. Here was the description from 2019:
Pitcher Skate Park is hosting the Trail of Terror again in 2019, an annual tradition since 2012. This year they promise “an all-new experience straight from your nightmares”! Along with the haunted trail, there is a pumpkin patch and food available. Warm up around the haunted fireplace… The trail typically gets bigger and better each year. Kids are welcome, and by request can be walked through with flashlights to meet the actors, for a fun and not-so-scary experience. The website is down for now, but look them up on Facebook for more info…

The West Deer Nightmare
CLOSED…. It’s been a while since it has been open. The website is down.
The West Deer Nightmare was a highly intense, terrifying Haunted House that depicted the history of serial killer Noah Hobbs and the 1952 West Deer Nightmare Massacre. Years after Hobbs was shot and killed it was discovered that he had a son named… Noah.
