Lawrenceville is getting a new hotel in 2019, with two new restaurants included in the project.
TRYP hotel, part of a boutique chain with 118 locations worldwide, will occupy the former Washington Education Center located on 40th Street near the bridge. Inside, visitors will find a pair of sister eateries called Brick Shop and Over Eden.
Situated in the old trade school’s masonry facility on the ground floor, Brick Shop will focus on contemporary American food with a robust wine program in a setting designed to harken back to the neighborhood’s working-class roots.
Unlike its main floor counterpart, Over Eden will be situated on the rooftop high above Eden Way. We’re told the menu will feature shareable dishes from a variety of cuisines.
TRYP partnered with Kate Romane Productions to develop the food and beverage programs. Romane, owner of Black Radish Kitchen, tapped fellow chef Mike Rado, formerly of Butcher on Butler, to helm the two hotel kitchens.
Holly Smith, director of the hotel’s food and beverage program, says they will focus on using locally sourced products for everything from the glassware to the produce.
Josh Aderholt, principal of The Century Group, which is developing the hotel, is excited to bring TRYP to Lawrenceville, a place he’s called home for 12 years.
“It’s just such an attraction for folks,” he says of the neighborhood. “We had a sense that people visiting Pittsburgh wanted to be in Lawrenceville, so a hotel made sense. And this project called out for an adaptive reuse of a building.”
There will be 108 rooms in the hotel, including some accommodations with additional bunk beds for families and larger groups. Pieces of the building’s history, including lockers, a repurposed gym floor and “other surprises” will be located throughout the facility, Aderholt says.
Other amenities that may appeal to local residents include a fitness center, wine shop and a lobby designed for socializing.
