WHAT: Founders’ Day
WHERE: Homewood Cemetery
WHEN: August 18, noon – 4 p.m.
Why You Should Go:
Explore the historic local landmark that’s the final resting place for 78,000 Pittsburghers of all walks of life.
Marking the site’s 140th anniversary, the family-friendly event will feature free activities at the 200-acre green space. A bucolic keystone nestled between Squirrel Hill, Point Breeze and Frick Park, it’s the only area cemetery to host an event of this kind.
See performances by Shakespeare in the Park, Steel City Ukuleles and Sunburst School of Music and enjoy a slice of birthday cake. Pop into the genealogy booth to search for your relatives in the cemetery and learn research tips, and check out a Victorian horse-drawn hearse, vintage cars and a massive model train.
