Here is a list of the top attractions and places to visit in the Pittsburgh and southwestern Pennsylvania area. Many of these attractions are in the city or suburbs, and all are within a couple of hours driving distance from Downtown Pittsburgh. Some of the items in the list are well known, but others not as much so. This collection is intended to provide a snapshot of what the region has to offer, from sporting events to cultural venues to historical places to visit.

1.  John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center

About This Attraction:   Officially known as the “Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center”, the History Center is one of the coolest attractions in the area and operates as both a museum and research facility. It is housed in a converted 160,000 sf warehouse. The exhibits are locally based, well done and in depth; plan to spend a whole day here.

About This Attraction:   Neslted in the "square" of Allegheny Center on the North Side lies the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh, housed in the old Buhl Planetarium building. Kids of all ages will find something interesting to discover and explore. The museum contains 3 floors and features several hands-on exhibits, as well as educational programs and special events. If you have young kids and are looking for things to do in the area, this attraction is highly recommended.
 

3.  Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens

About This Attraction:   Located across from Flagstaff Hill and Carnegie Mellon University, Phipps Conservatory adds even more beauty to Schenley Park. Phipps is known widely for its seasonal flower shows, but stays fresh with ever-changing seasonal events and special exhibits.
 

4.  Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium

About This Attraction:   The Zoo is arguably one of the favorite family attractions in the City of Pittsburgh, and for good reason. The Pittsburgh Zoo is home to over 400 species of animals, including 22 endangered. The Zoo is home to the PPG Aquarium, with everything from stingrays to penguins to sharks, Kids Kingdom and a zoo train. The Zoo is open year round, and features educational and special events year round. Zoo camps are popular in the summer, as well as several "members-only" nights. In October, the Zoo holds its annual "Zoo Boo" for younger kids, which mixes trick or treating with up-close experiences with certain critters.
 

5.  Carnegie Museum of Art

About This Attraction:   One of the four Carnegie Museums, the Museum of Art features the Heinz and Scaife art galleries of paintings, sculpture and more. There are changing exhibits and frequent special events. If in Oakland, be sure to check out this extensive museum collection.

About This Attraction:   Housed near the Library and Art Museum, the Natural History museum features global and local exhibits in its extensive galleries and changing exhibits. It is also home to several ongoing research departments, including the areas of botany, anthropology, mammals and birds. What a great place to learn about the natural world as it was, and is today!
 

7.  The Meadows Racetrack & Casino

About This Attraction:   The Meadows Racetrack has been the area's home of sulky horse racing for decades. Place your bets and watch the action live, with races being held nightly. Popularity in the sport was on the decline, but got a boost from the addition of the casino, adjacent to the race track. The casino has brought new life to the sport, and now patrons can wager on races, slots or table games, all in one location.
 

8.  Meadowcroft Rockshelter & Village

About This Attraction:   In the quiet woods just outside of Avella, PA, lies the oldest known site of human habitation on the continent. A National Historic Landmark, the Meadowcroft Rockshelter is a 16,000 year old rock overhang that was used for shelter. Now under excavation, visitors can get a glimpse into the distant past and walk on the same ground as our ancient ancestors. Also on site is Meadowcroft Village, a museum and collection of building and structures from the 19th century. Take a step back in time and see what rural life was like 150 years ago in western Pennsylvania. There are special re-enactments and events yearlong. Also, don't miss the 16th century indian village, and see what life was like 400 years ago.
 

9.  Fallingwater

About This Attraction:   In 1937, construction was completed on Fallingwater, designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The brilliant design fused nature and function like no other - complete with a stream running through the house. This much celebrated vacation home in the Laurel Highlands of Edgar & Liliane Kaufman is now open to the public and under direction of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. Plan to visit during all four seasons, as each season brings its own unique beauty.
 

10.  Somerset Historical Center

About This Attraction:   The Somerset Historical Center presents and maintains the area's rural history, from Somerset's first farmers to present day. Onsite, there is a large visitor's center along with several historical buildings on the grounds which have been preserved and moved to this location. There are educational programs and workshops on an ongoing basis, along with permanent and rotating exhibits. The Visitors Center is also home to the Historical Society’s Genealogical Research Library, which is also open to the public. Take a step back in time and visit this 150-acre history museum!
 

11.  United Flight 93 Memorial Info Center

About This Attraction:   "On Tuesday morning, September 11, 2001, the U.S. came under attack when four commercial airliners were hijacked and used to strike targets on the ground. Nearly 3,000 people tragically lost their lives. Because of the actions of the 40 passengers and crew aboard one of the planes, Flight 93, the attack on the U.S. Capitol was thwarted." This quote is from the website, and says it all. The permanent memorial is now open, and the park is run by the National Park Service. However, the site being a memorial, it does not have typical recreational amenities that many other national parks offer.
 

12.  Kentuck Knob (Frank Lloyd Wright)

About This Attraction:   As a friend and business acquaintance of Edgar Kaufmann, I. N. Hagen visited Fallingwater often and hired Frank Lloyd Wright to design a similar home for him nearby. Kentuck Knob is near Chalk Hill, on the other side of Ohiopyle from Fallingwater, and now offers private and public tours as well. The homestead features a unique “Usonian” design, with a single floor plan with no attic or basement.

About This Attraction:   The highest point is Pennsylvania is marked on a rock on Negro Mountain in Elk Lick Township, Somerset County. This point, situated at elevation 3,213 feet, is the "high point" of the surrounding Mt. Davis Natural Area. This area features hiking trails, a picnic area and an observation tower, from which you can see all the way to Salisbury, MD on a clear day.
 

14.  Laurel Caverns

About This Attraction:   Laurel Caverns is located on top of (and within) Chestnut Ridge, covering 435 acres and boasting Pennsylvania’s largest cave. Two miles of passageway await the caver looking for an adventure, most of which remains undeveloped. This is a great place for aspiring spelunkers to begin because the park enforces safety measures that are usually absent in wild caves. It also offers reasonably priced “family guided” tours all day long through the “developed” part of the cave. These tours are about an hour long and are both fun and educational.

About This Attraction:   What true Pittsburgher doesn’t have a special place in their heart for Kennywood? As the region’s premier park, Kennywood bills itself these days as “America’s Finest Traditional Amusement Park” – and it may very well be! Founded in 1898 as trolley park to give trolley riders a reason to use the trolley line, Kennywood (and about a dozen other such parks) featured dancing, picnicking and a few rides. Today, the park boasts 6 roller coasters and 4 water attractions among the dozens of creative rides and games throughout the park. The thing about Kennywood that makes it special is that it introduces newer and faster rides without taking away from its traditional roots and unique charm.

About This Attraction:   Idewild Park is locally known as the rural sister park to Kennywood, but it currently is promoting being "voted #2 Best Kid's Park In The World" by Amusement Today. A full scale amusement park, it is highly regarded for it's attractions for young children, picnic groves and the "Soak Zone" water park. Every October, the park holds its annual "Hallowboo" during daylight hours.

About This Attraction:   The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum near Washington, PA is "more than a ride, it's an experience", as they say. The mission of the museum is to present and educate about the trolley area. Come explore the visitor's center and ride ther trolley throughout the grounds, exploring the buidlings and exhibits onsite. The trolley museum is known for it's events, especially around the holidays. The "Santa Trolley", "Bunny Trolley" and "Pumpkin Patch Trolley" are always hits with kids.

About This Attraction:   If you are looking for a different kind of museum, be sure to check out the Mattress Factory Art Museum in the historic "Mexican War Streets" section of the North Side. The museum's exhibits are unique in that they are room sized, allowing visitors to really "get into" them. Special programs are featured throughout the year.
 

19.  Sandcastle Water Park

About This Attraction:   Sandcastle stands alone in Pittsburgh as the largest, most complete water park. Sandcastle has it all – over 10 water slides, a lazy river, the “Riverplex Picnic Area” - even go-carts. If you’re old enough, stick around after dark and have a few drinks or play some volleyball at Sandbar, the adjacent outdoor watering hole.

About This Attraction:   Open to the public since 1990, the Frick Art and Historical Center is centered around "Clayton", the mansion and Pittsburgh home of Henry Clay Frick and his family in the late nineteenth century. Come enjoy a glimpse of the refined and cultured lifestyle of the Frick family in this historic setting. Tours of Clayton are available, and admissionis free for the Frick Art & Historical Center, Art Museum and the Car and Carriage Museum! Reservations are recommended by not required. Finish off your visit with a stop at the Frick Café and the Museum store.

About This Attraction:   Pittsburgh has always been a melting pot of world heritages, where traditional customs and ways are still celebrated. Each room, while serving as a student classroom, reflects the art, history and culture of a particular nationality. Many rooms were financed, designed and built by heritage groups many years ago.

About This Attraction:   McConnells Mill State Park, in Lawrence County, encompasses 2,546 acres of the spectacular Slippery Rock Creek Gorge. Created by the draining of glacial lakes thousands of years ago, the gorge has steeps sides and the valley floor is littered with huge boulders and is a national natural landmark. A gristmill built in the 1800s is open for tours. The park is open from sunrise to sunset, year-round.

About This Attraction:   The town of Windber was created by the Berwind-White Coal Mining Company for the exclusive purpose of providing its workers a nearby place to live. Remnants of the old town are still visible today. The Windber Coal Heritage Center tells the story of the miners and their families and educates through interactive, state-of-the-art exhibits, media presentations and other archives. The site contains a visitor's center, gift shop and features walking tours.

About This Attraction:   South Hills native and CMU graduate Andy Warhol made his mark on the New York art scene in the mid to late 20th century. The Warhol museum now has the most extensive collection of his work, including 273 films and over 4000 works of art in various media. There are also archives available for research if you are into art history. The museum is operated as one of the four Carnegie Museums in Pittsburgh.

About This Attraction:   Station Square lies at the base of Mt. Washington across from Downtown Pittsburgh and offers a “unique shopping, dining and entertainment experience.” Including its recent expansion, Bessimer Court, Station Square contains well-known restaurants such as the Hard Rock Café, Houlihan's and Buca Di Beppo. It also houses the Buckhead Saloon as well as several stores and shops. Station Square is the most visited destination for tourists in Pittsburgh. It is also a central point for several nearby attractions, including the Monongahela Incline and Gateway Clipper Fleet.

33.  Monongahela Incline

About This Attraction:   Opening on May 8, 1870, the Mon Incline became the first passenger incline and has been in continual operation since. It is the oldest and steepest incline in the United States. Today, it conveniently connects the attractions at Station Square with the overlooks on Grandview Ave. in Mt. Washington and is therefore a prominent tourist attraction in of itself!
 

34.  Duquesne Incline

About This Attraction:   The more westerly of the Mt. Washington inclines, the Duquesne Incline is itself a working museum with a long history. It still uses the original 1877 cable cars to traverse up and down the hillside! A trip on the incline is a must for visitors, and the Duquesne incline in particular is close to many restaurants on Mt. Washington. And of course, there’s always the great view of the Golden Triangle and surrounding areas from the overlooks!

37.  Fort Ligonier

About This Attraction:   In the 1760s, the British Fort Ligonier served as an important post between Fort Pitt to the west and more established territory to the east. Today, eight acres of the fort have been preserved with many reconstructions, within a 1,600-ft. retrenchment. There is also an expansive museum, with a history gallery, and art gallery, and a special George Washington collection. Check the website for current events and other educational programs.

About This Attraction:   The National Aviary is the nation’s only indoor nonprofit bird zoo, with over 600 birds from over 200 species, many of which are threatened and endangered. There is a special emphasis on birds from the rain forest or other wetland areas, but every continent is represented. The Aviary holds special events, family camps and even Photo Safaris on Saturdays. There is something for everyone!

Within walking distance, the affiliated “SportsWorks” provides physical challenges and active fun along the same lines.

About This Attraction:   The Westmoreland features paintings and sculptures by well known American artists and is all about the American Spirit. About This Attraction:   As any “Yinzer” from the ‘Burgh will tell you – Pittsburgh is truly a football town. If you are visiting during football season, good luck getting tickets – every game has been sold out for as long as I can remember. Check out Heinz Field, especially the “Great Hall”, or just come for the tailgating as many people do. The Steelers are loved nationwide because of their legendary success, but also because of the Rooney family that has owned the team since 1933 and still lives within walking distance to the field.

About This Attraction:   On a hockey night in Pittsburgh, take in one of the premier teams in the NHL - the Piuttsburgh Penguins! - Featuring Maulkin, Staal, Fleury, and hopefully soon, Sidney Crosby once again. At the helm, of course, is owner Mario Lemieux, who is much beloved in the city for his 2 decades of play and for helping to keep the team in Pittsburgh. The Penguins now call The Consol Energy Center home, a brand-new facility near the site of the former Mellon (Civic) Arena, which has been torn down.

About This Attraction:   One of the worst American tragedies at the time, the City of Johnstown, PA was leveled on May 31, 1889 by a storm that led to a dam collapse that killed 2,209 people. The wall of water that hit Johnstown and its upstream neighbors was said to hit with a force that of Nigara Falls. The Johnstown Flood Museum remembers and documents this important piece of American History.

About This Attraction:   As the region's largest ski area, Seven Springs is known for its downhill slopes and gentle trails, and has been offering more and more alternate activities for snowboarders and snowtubers each year. About This Attraction:   Hopes are always high that the Pirates will turn their ship around for some winning baseball, but even if that doesn’t happen, PNC Park is one of the finest ball parks around and a great place to watch a game. About This Attraction:   Reconstructed in 1999, the Grist Mill is a close replica to the original that was owned by George Washington. Washington had the mill constructed in 1774-1776 on land that he owned as an investment. The Perryopolis Historical Society offers tours of the Mill, as well as a Distillery, “Bake Shop” and other attractions on the site.

The Quebec Run Wild Area maintains several hiking trails, and some of the streams are stocked with trout. The remote nature of this area also helps to keep the crowds away!
