Lawrence County is situated in the northwestern corner of the Pittsburgh metro area, but is in close proximity to Interstates 76, 79 & 80 and bisected by Routes 422 and 60. Despite the access, the area is predominantly rural with quiet countryside surrounding the central city of New Castle. The Amish areas near New Wilmington and the quaint main street of Volant are favorites of visitors.

The county is also the home of Slippery Rock University and McConnells Mill State Park. Families can enjoy "Living Treasures Animal Park" as well. One of the more unique boroughs in the region is SNPJ, a 500-acre recreation center and vacation spot for Slovenian members of the Slovene National Benefit Society.

New Castle is known as the "Fireworks Capital of the World". It is the headquarters of Zambelli Fireworks, one of the oldest and largest fireworks companies in the nation.
