Celebrated as the "Christmas Tree Capital of the World", Indiana County maintains
a solid agricultural base in a rural setting. In contrast, however, is the busy
college town of Indiana in the center of the county along with the industrious Homer
City nearby. Other than the dominant presence of IUP, Indiana also features the
county courthouse and "Jimmy Stewart Museum" in its central business district.
For nature enthusiasts, Yellow Creek State Park provides outdoor recreation and
beautiful scenery at the northern tip of Chestnut Ridge. The Conemaugh River Valley
to the south also provides such scenic views. In the northwestern part of the county,
there are several Amish farms, and evidence of their culture is easily seen when
driving the back country roads. Smicksburg has developed a quaint town center for
visitors in the heart of Amish country.
