Furthest to the east within the SW Pennsylvania region lies Cambria County.
Cambria is the home of Johnstown, which is large enough to have its own metropolitan
area associated with it. Some would consider this area part of central Pennsylvania
as well. The county is primarily accessed via Routes 22 and 422 to the east and west,
and US 219 in a north / south direction.
The City of Johnstown is renowned for the Johnstown Flood in 1889, a tragic event
that in many ways began the push for modern day engineering safeguards along America's
waterways. It has a rich industrious history with much to offer, including the Flood
Museum and Inclined Plane. The rest of the county is dotted with numerous smaller
towns such as Ebensburg, Patton, Scalp Level and Portage (home of the Portage Museum).
For outdoor activities, visitors enjoy Prince Gallitzin State Park and the Ghost
Town Trail near Nanty Glo, among others.
Cambria County is also the home of St. Francis College and the University of Pittsburgh,
Johnstown Campus (UPJ).
