By following the Ohio River out of Pittsburgh to the northwest, one will eventually
find Beaver County. The majority of the settlement lies within industrial communities along the
Ohio and Beaver Rivers, including Alliquippa, Rochester and Beaver Falls. Away from the river
valleys, Beaver County maintains a more rural feel.
Beaver County is the home of Old Economy, a nineteenth century religious settlement that accumulated
great wealth and success during it's day due to innovations in agriculture and business. The
"Harmonist" society adhered to strict religious principals, peaking around 1830 and eventually disolving
in 1905. The grounds have been restored and public tours are available today.
Other well known locations include Geneva College and the Shippingport Atomic Power Station, known for being
the first nuclear power plant in the United States (open in 1957, still in operation). There are several
county and state parks to visit, and many public events such as the Hookstown Fair each August.
